The goggles

Every night vision goggle and thermal imager that comes with the plugin, each filmed on the same walk through the night set, so they compare side by side. Hover one to play it.

The goggles are starter effects in Plugins/BlendableFX/Overlays/Devices: put one on by its type with Equip Night Vision, or duplicate it and tune the copy, and set the copy on the node as Your Own. Each clip here is the same few steps towards a fire barrel with a turn of the head, in the same moonlight, so what changes is only the goggle.

Monoculars#

A single tube over one eye on a helmet mount, folded down into place. The other eye sees the world untouched round it, which is how most people wear one: a picture to see by and an eye kept for the dark.

Binoculars#

A tube for each eye, on arms that swing in to the eyes once the goggle has folded down. Depth to judge distance by, and no bare eye.

Panoramics#

Four tubes in one heavy block, the outer pair angled out to the sides for a field more than twice as wide. The inner pair fuse into one round view, and all four run into each other as a binocular's two do, with no line between.

Older, damaged, and with a clip-on#

An early tube, grainy and haloed and bent at the edges, its phosphor glowing on behind bright things; a monocular with a cracked objective; and two tubes with a thermal imager clipped on in front.

Thermal imagers#

Not a tube but a picture of heat, in the palettes thermal imagers use: white hot, black hot, green hot, red hot, a rainbow, an ironbow and an arctic. Anything drawn into custom depth reads as warm.

Night vision through a scope or binoculars#

A night vision picture held to the eye rather than worn: a riflescope and a pair of binoculars, each zooming with the camera.

How they go on#

Fold Down folds the goggle down from the helmet as a real one is: it swings down on its mount's hinge in an arc and in towards the face, its eyepieces turning from the ground to the eyes, so from the eye it swings in from just above the view, close and tipped away, and opens out as it reaches the face, its glass glowing until the eyepieces line up and the picture comes through. Fold Down Then Swing In folds it down with its tubes swung out on their arms, then swings them in. Pull Down slides it straight down already in line with the eyes, and Fade In fades it in. A panoramic is one block, so it always folds down whole. The effect's Equip Curve sets how it moves, evenly, easing, or on a spring that overshoots and settles.

As it snaps into place it Settles: a quick jitter dying away, as a weapon settles after a reload, which gives it weight. A heavier goggle shudders slower and wider; Settle sets how hard and Settle Time how long. One that folds down then swings in settles as its fold lands, its arms bouncing on their hinges as hard as Fold Settle says, and clicks lighter as the tubes close on the eyes. Its Shakes can play a camera shake as it starts and as it locks into place too: with Blendable installed, Shake_Impact_Settle on When It's In settles the camera with it.
