Pighaus Games Docs

These docs describe Fixed Angles and Blendshot, the next update, in development: everything in 1.3 and what it adds. 1.3 is in testing: read its docs.

Groups, giants and dynamics1.3

Framing a fight rather than a pair, a target many times your size, and rows that change the shot as the fight changes. Every setting lives on the Lock-On Preset's Two-Shot.

A two-shot frames two people. A fight is often more than that: a pack closing in, or a boss whose knees are at your eye line. These settings say what the shot does about it. All of them are on the Lock-On Preset's Two-Shot, so a preset for a crowd and one for a duel can sit side by side.

Framing a group#

Switch on Frame The Group and the shot keeps everyone counted inside a box on screen, not just the two of you. Each one eases in as they arrive and out as they leave, so someone walking up joins the shot rather than appearing in it.

SettingWhat it does
Who CountsNear The Target, Near The Player, Only Those Engaged (marked by gameplay on their Lock-On Target) or Everyone In The Fight (everyone auto lock is holding).
WithinHow close they have to be to count, cm.
Counting At MostThe most it counts, nearest first, so a horde doesn't pull the camera out of the level.
Takes Over FromHow many others it takes before the group takes over from the two-shot.
Keep Inside From / ToThe box everyone is kept in, percent of the screen.
Make Room ByPulling Back, Widening The Lens, or Pulling Back, Then Widening.
Pull Back Up ToHow far the camera may pull back, as a multiple of the lock's arm.
Widen Up ToHow much wider the lens may go, degrees.
Come Round Behind You To FitWhen there's no more room and someone is still out, brings the camera round behind you as little as it takes.
TakesHow long the shot takes to go over to the group, and back. A change of preset that brings the group in or takes it out uses the change's own time instead.

Switching to someone already in the group doesn't move the camera: it's the same people in the same box, and the shot was framing all of them already.

Giants#

Frame Big Targets says what happens when the target is much bigger than you:

ChoiceThe shot
By The Lock PointFrames the lock point whatever the size. A giant's knee is framed like anyone's chest.
By Its SizeFrames the whole of it, the middle of its body halfway up the screen, and makes room to fit it in.
Low Hero ShotLike By Its Size, from low down: the shot tilts up by Look Up By and lets the giant loom past the edges of the screen.

A target counts as big from Big From times your own height and fully big at Fully Big At, 1.5 and 3 by default, easing in between. How Much By Size mixes the lock point and the whole body. A Lock-On Target's Height and Width set its size for framing; left at 0 they're measured from its colliding bounds.

Dynamics#

Dynamics are rows that change the shot as the fight changes, and each reads as a sentence:

> As Driven By goes from Starts At to Full At, change Changes by By.

A row that brings the camera in as the target closes, for example, is Driven By Distance, Starts At 1500, Full At 300, Changes Arm By -100. The rows add up, and each eases over its own Takes.

Driven ByMeasures
DistanceHow far apart you are, cm
Height DifferenceHow far the target is above you, cm
Angle Off The LineHow far round from behind you the camera stands, degrees
Target SizeHow tall the target is, cm
Player SpeedHow fast you're moving, cm/s
Pitch, YawWhere the shot is looking
Enemies NearHow many others are within Count Enemies Within of the target

A row Changes the Arm, the Field Of View, the Pitch or Yaw of the shot, the Pivot Bias, or either spot by Move The Spot By.

Bands#

Where dynamics bend one preset, a band swaps the preset itself. On the lock-on component, Switch By Band turns them on; each band names a preset and the range it holds over (While the Distance, Height Difference, Target Size or Enemies Near Is Between two values). The first band that applies frames the lock, and Let Go Beyond stops a target near the edge flicking the framing back and forth.

Go deeperHow the fit makes room

The box is fitted on the shot as authored, the dynamics and a hero tilt included; what the stick does on top never moves the camera back. The fit starts from the arm the solve settled on, so a shot that came in closer for a near target fits from there, and the extra arm is sprung, so someone walking out of the box pulls the camera back with the same weight the turn has.

Someone joining or leaving eases the box over Takes. A fresh lock takes everyone already there at once, since the lock itself eases the whole shot in, and so does the group as it takes over or hands back: its own weight carries everyone together. Eased one by one as well, the middle of the group moved slowly at first and then all at once, and a change of preset that brought a group in turned the camera the wrong way before it came round. That change now moves the group on its own clock, so the group lands with it.
